Techno ’94 – a production that grew beyond expectations

31 October 1994 – Panishof, Borgloon

In the history of Belgian rave culture, Techno ’94 remains an event that continues to capture the imagination. Organised by B&B Productions and Ravers United, with Ben Biets and Bart Gijsens among the driving forces behind it, the event was intended to be exceptional by Belgian standards at the time.

Ben Biets approached PDA Sound & Lighting Service to handle the technical production. In 1994, we were still very much in our early days ourselves. We did not yet have the experience or resources we have today and initially thought it would be a large, but fairly ordinary local dance event.

It soon became clear that we had seriously underestimated its scale.

Ticket sales started rising rapidly. At one point, we were told that a single record shop in the Liège region had already sold more than 2,000 tickets. It was then obvious that we had to step things up.

We started approaching other companies to gather the additional equipment we needed. Interestingly, many of those companies were themselves still young businesses. Together, we formed a technical team that delivered an exceptional production for its time.

The final technical specifications were impressive: 40,000 watts of sound and 100,000 watts of lighting, including aircrafts, roboscans, smoke machines, Robocolors, strobes, lasers, flower lights, microstars and a video screen.

The line-up was equally remarkable for Belgium, featuring names such as Mike Dred, Tanith, Bountyhunter, The Fly, Tofke, Miss Djax, Yves Deruyter, Zzino and Franky Jones, together with live acts by Acid Junkies, Acid Kirk and Jones & Stephenson.

Simone Angel from MTV’s The Party Zone hosted the event.

4,000 expected, 8,000 inside

The organisers expected around 4,000 visitors. In the end, approximately 8,000 people made it inside, while an estimated 2,000 additional visitors were left outside.

The Panishof infrastructure was simply not designed to handle such a crowd. Long queues formed, movement between the two halls was difficult and temperatures inside quickly became extremely high.

Despite these problems, Techno ’94 became one of the major Belgian rave stories of its time.

Looking back, perhaps the most remarkable aspect is just how pioneering the event was. Rave culture was growing rapidly, organisers were experimenting with increasingly large events, and the technical production industry itself was still in its early stages.

For PDA Sound & Lighting Service, Techno ’94 was therefore a major challenge. We had to react quickly, collaborate and bring together the necessary equipment to turn the organisers’ ambitions into reality.

And there is an important part of our own history in that story as well: of the various young technical companies we worked with at the time, we are ultimately the only one that has remained in business.

What started in 1994 with an unexpectedly large rave and a young company being pushed to its limits grew into more than thirty years of PDA – today GROUP-PDA.

For us, Techno ’94 was not just a legendary rave. It was also one of the productions that helped lay the foundations of our own story.

A piece of GROUP-PDA history

In 1994, PDA Sound & Lighting Service was still in its early days. We did not yet have the extensive equipment inventory or technical capabilities we have today. By working together with other young companies, we were nevertheless able to deliver the production.

That is what makes Techno ’94 so special to us. It was not only an important moment in Belgian rave culture, but also one of the productions in which we, as a young company, pushed our own boundaries.

Over the years, PDA continued to grow. What started as a business built around one person eventually became the family business GROUP-PDA it is today. The many collaborations established during those pioneering years helped shape our further development. At the same time, the arrival of a younger generation brought new ideas, knowledge and energy to the company.

In this way, PDA Sound & Lighting Service evolved into GROUP-PDA: a new generation building on more than thirty years of experience, expertise and relationships built over the years.

More than thirty years later, we are still here.
